Should We Use the Internet on the Elections?
On 21st of July, we had an big election for the House of Councilors, which the Liberal Democratic Party won by a large majority. Abenomics( Abe+economics), amending the constitution and nuclear power generations were the issue of this election. The opposition partis such as the Democratic Party and the Ishin-no-kai suffered a crushing defeat in the end. From the other point of view, this election had an interesting aspects that the candidates can use an internet for the election for the first time. We heard that SNSs were used efficiently in the election in the US, but the candidates had not been able to use the internet for elections in Japan, for example they couldn’t tweet or contribute to facebook during the elections. There has been many discussions about that and it started at last. Therefore, All parties used the internet on twitter, facebook, NicoNico Doga and so on. It is great that we can get the information anytime. However, according to 時事通信社, 86.5% people did not refer to the internet on the election. I thought there were several reasons about the result. In my opinion, we should use the internet helping to choose the candidates for elections.
First of all, I have to show the biggest reason why people did not use the internet on the election. It is the ages of the people who went to vote. It has been said that the low voting rate and the low voting rate with younger people. As the people get older, they vote. It is also said that most elderly people usually do not use the internet. It means most people who went vote and answered the questionnaire might be the elderly people and they might not refer the internet as a media on the election. TV and newspapers must be much more familiar to them. I think this is the biggest reason of the result.
Probably there are many reasons about it and then I would like to tell why people should use the internet more. One reason is that we can get the information at anytime anywhere. Of course, TV and newspapers give us a lot of information about the Party and the candidates. but it’s not all informations we need. What is more, their informations are often not partial. Famous candidates are appeared more than others. It is a laborious work to gather all information one by one. Thus, we should use the internet to gather the informations we need. We can get all candidates’ informations at once. People must decide which candidate to vote from all candidates’ and parties’ informations not their names. The internet is the fastest and easiest way to get information I think.
One of the other reason is to decrease the cost which the candidates need to spend during the elections. Modern elections need a lot of money to print millions of handbills and posters, to use cars and to hire the people. Without that they do not have the way to give us their informations including their names and faces. Therefore, they use a lot of money to win. I think it means that the people who are not rich have no qualifications to be politicians. How ridiculous that is! Anyone should have the qualifications to be politicians. Filling the gap between the rich and the poor, the internet should be used on elections. The candidates do not have to use so much money to give the information on the internet. This useful media should be made good use of.
In conclusion, I think the internet is an useful tool on elections. It will fill the gaps we have. Of course we need to improve many things. Needless to say, we need to have more attention to the politics and increase the voting rate. I hope that young people get more attention to the politics by using the internet and go voting considering our future.
